The Admiral Collingwood

About the Project

JD Wetherspoon acquired a disused hotel in 2005 which, following and structural survey, proved to be difficult to repair and refurbish. Members of the just h architects team were briefed to design a ‘new build’ pub for the site. The conditions the planning authority imposed were that the replacement building had to be of a high quality and provide a landmark for the town.

We decided that a low rise development for the site had to be iconic and the design be borne out of the site location close to the sea. The concept is based on a form of a conch shell. The seaside theme also continues on into the interior design with a stair following the curved shell form up to the roof top terrace providing views to the sea.

The project won the Camra national design award for a new build pub.
