Context

Modern Bury stands on its own, but has also become an important commuter town to Manchester overseen by the Metrolink network in 1992. The town was also linked to the motorway network with the opening of the M66, accessed from the east side of the town, in 1978.

Bury Market's history began in 1440 by virtue of a Royal Charter, originally granted to a localKnight  Sir  Thomas  Pilkington.  The  original  Market  involved  the  exchange  of  farm  produce, livestock, and cotton goods as supplied by a local network of mills and factories. The original Market was cited on the curved stone steps of the Market cross in 1559, which is now the site of the Robert Peel statue.

As the town expanded in evolution, the old Marketplace became so popular, it was bursting at the seams, inadequate in size, with stalls so close to each other that they obstructed any flow of shoppers. In 1839, a new Open Market, set out within a walled triangle, opened on thearea of land now known as Kay Gardens.

In 1876 Bury council took responsibility for the Market and began to update and formalise the area, deciding in 1901 to close the Market for safety reasons. A new Market was opened on an adjacent site, on the same day.

In 1968 a fire raised the Market hall to the ground, but trading continued within the embers.

Outdoor  traders  gave  up  parts  of  their  stalls  to  indoor  traders  demonstrating  solidarit by everyone. In 1971 the old Bury Market had moved to the current site. The New Market Hall was one of the best equipped and most architecturally striking Market halls in the UK with its Brutalist winged roof, a nod to Eero Sarinens JFK airport New York.

The final construction phase for Bury Market was completed in 1999 with the opening of the new purpose-built Fish and Meat Hall and the refurbishment of the Outdoor Market including covered walkways and shuttered stalls.
